Reflecting on her decision to join the program, Gudiya expressed her happiness at gaining insight into life beyond her immediate community. The newfound knowledge of computer functioning and online banking instilled in her a sense of empowerment for her future endeavors.
In DEF’s two-decade journey of digital empowerment, one major mandate flowing from the organizational ethos is greater integration by ensuring that women have equal access to digital services and opportunities. Digital inclusion provides women with access to information, education, resources and entitlements that empower them to make informed decisions about their lives.
EMpower is one such project that enables women to push boundaries and break gender-based stereotypes. As a part of the digital literacy program being implemented in Chiraudi village, Gudiya is a 19-year-old girl who pushes patriarchal boundaries everyday. Gudiya and her family recently shifted to Chiraudi but there was no computer institute nearby in the village and therefore, she decided to join the DEF digital literacy center situated in Ghazipur which was very far from the village she lives in. Commuting from Chiraudi to Ghazipur Dairy Farm was a challenging task, but her determination and commitment enabled her to attend regular classes.
Her passion for learning and natural aptitude for technology allowed her to excel in the Digital Literacy Program. Through the program, she acquired knowledge about various computer applications such as Notepad, Paint, Microsoft Office, and Computer theory. Eager to expand her horizons, Gudiya actively participated in workshops focusing on government schemes and soft skills, which enhanced her learning experience. Her efforts even extended to improving her typing speed. Moreover, she embraced online Digi classes and CoderDojo Sessions, delving into coding and honing her spoken English skills. She said “I am happy that I joined the program. I got to learn about life outside my community. I learned about computer functioning and online banking that is going to help me in the future. Currently, I am focusing on finishing my high school education, and I will probably focus on learning advanced computer skills.”
With her dream of becoming a professor and her journey towards it, Gudiya makes her family proud everyday. Her aim of completing higher-education is an inspiring example for the community members around her. Through DEF’s digital literacy program, Gudiya can now harness the power of the digital world to achieve her dreams.
